I went back to my old bubble diagram and tried to create a building which resulted from proper planning. I started to group spaces together into three distinct groups; Production, Post-Production and Administration.
This was then layed out into a rough floor plan.
Here you can see two important things. 1, I had dismissed the idea of one perfect digital facade and just enveloped the spaces in a conceptual skin. 2, I had the photo balcony harshly protruding from the main building as if it was added at the last minute.
This led me to think about joining two dissimilar shapes together to create a rather violent insertion.
Then I realised that I was thinking too formally again and was going against my new design approach.
After experimenting with different spacial ideas I decided to try a new way. I decided to think of an interesting way in which people might use the building and revolve the spaces around that.
I determined that photography has a journey....
and from this journey I decided to split my building in several smaller buildings. Taking the photos at the highest point and then having a shop and gallery at the bottom for public access.
These series of buildings would run down the cliffs until they reached Howard Smith Wharves. However, this would provide problems with accessibility.
Next I thought about incorporating the building with location. People often run through there and I want those users to enjoy this building which has so rudely ruined their jogging route. In this way, I want the pedestrians and passers-by to involve themselves with the building.
I decided to create a pathway for them through the building which would provide some delight to their trip.
I attempted to create a pathway for the runners that sat behind the LED screen but in front of the main building, with the upper floors above. This would provide some interaction with the building as they travel through the tunnel.
This got me thinking about other technologies that I could incorporate into this design to enrich the experience. After all this whole design is supposed to be technology driven. Perhaps this could help me find the form I wanted.
